Tichy Racing was founded in the late 1990s in Vancouver, Canada, where the Tichy family lived, trained, and traveled extensively to pursue elite ski racing. During this time, the three oldest children—Martin, Katerina, and Michael—were coached directly by their parents, Milos and Marcela Tichy, and by the youngest son, Richard, who served as the family support crew.
The Tichy children established themselves as prominent figures in North American alpine skiing through consistent performances. The Tichy family became widely recognized within the international ski racing community throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. While representing Canada for most of their careers, Katerina and Martin switched their representation to the Czech Republic from 1991 to 1997 to ensure continuity in coaching. Changing country representation during the 1990s was a period when such transitions were rare and logistically challenging for athletes. Their racing careers achieved significant results in FIS, NorAm, World Championships, World Cup, National Championships, and Katerina went on to compete in the 1998 Olympic Games. Their impact extended beyond podium finishes to meaningful contributions to the ski industry, including innovations and patents that advanced the sport. At a time when parent-led coaching was uncommon, Milos and Marcela successfully guided all three athletes to national and international success, while also building a business that supported sponsorships and long-term advancements. This performance not only elevated their profile on the world stage but also highlighted the potential of immigrants to excel in North American skiing programs.
The Tichy family’s unique journey has been recognized within the ski racing community and featured in various magazines. Known as true “road warriors,” the family trained and traveled year-round out of a converted 15-passenger van, prioritizing development, discipline, and togetherness. Longtime coach Hermann Gollner described the Tichys as “the most unselfish and tight-knit ski racing family” he had encountered in over 50 years of coaching.
The family moved the business to Government Camp, Oregon, at the base of Mt. Hood in 2000. This had been a favorite training ground for the family for years, and the opportunity arose to make it home. Katerina later retired from competitive racing in 2002, Martin in 2006, and Michael in 2010. Today, Tichy Racing's mission has evolved to focus on developing and supporting the next generation of athletes, drawing on decades of elite experience and innovative coaching principles. The families’ multinational perspective provides unique insights into international racing standards, aiding program design that fosters athletes' progression from developmental to competitive levels.
Tichy Racing treats all its athletes like family and provides consistent, timely feedback to help them make substantial progress. By drawing on their experience, the family and coaching staff help participants build technical skills and race readiness. Today, Tichy Racing is best known for its premier summer training programs at Mount Hood, Oregon, and for its commitment to individual athlete development. The program has trained numerous athletes, emphasizing holistic skill development, thereby sustaining a pipeline of talent. Tichy Racing emphasizes year-round preparation for events through specialized camps at locations in Oregon, Colorado, Austria, Belgium, and Canada, featuring quality training, video analysis, and small-group instruction tailored for U8 through FIS-age racers and Master racers. Blending European technical expertise with North American resilience, the program is now staffed and coached by three generations of the Tichy Family and former racers. Together, they continue the family legacy by delivering strong communication and a culture rooted in passion for the sport and long-term athlete success. Mt. Hood will always be the home base, but you can join the Tichy Family at various destinations where the snow is hard and the turns are fast.
